Most low cost routes out of Germany leave from Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart and Cologne. If you stay flexible on dates, Central and Eastern Europe are the cheapest places to fly, followed by the Balkans and southern Spain. The rules are simple: fly midweek, travel with hand luggage only, and book two to six weeks ahead rather than the night before.
From Frankfurt, Sofia, Prague, Budapest and Krakow are reliably low. From Berlin you get strong prices to Barcelona, Vienna and most of Italy. From Munich, the shortest and cheapest hops are to Zagreb, Ljubljana and Venice. Wizz Air, Ryanair and easyJet run most of these routes, with Eurowings and Lufthansa filling the gaps at a higher price.
The numbers below are ballpark ranges to set expectations, not live quotes. Run the search at the top of this page for the current price on your exact dates.
| Route | Typical return | Best time to fly |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt to Sofia | 45 to 75 euros | Midweek, outside July and August |
| Frankfurt to Krakow | 40 to 65 euros | Semesterferien shoulder weeks |
| Berlin to Budapest | 30 to 55 euros | Tuesday or Wednesday departures |
| Berlin to Barcelona | 50 to 90 euros | Avoid weekends and holidays |
| Munich to Zagreb | 45 to 80 euros | Spring and autumn |
Set your dates to flexible so you can see a whole month at once. Flying out on a Tuesday and back on a Thursday is almost always cheaper than a Friday to Sunday trip. Travel with a single cabin bag, since checked luggage often costs more than the fare itself on budget carriers. If your semester break is long, look one or two weeks either side of the busiest dates, where prices drop sharply. Book directly with the airline after comparing here, so there are no extra agency fees.
If you hold a German residence permit you can travel freely across the Schengen area, so you never need a separate visa for these trips. Keep your student card with you, since some museums, trains and attractions give discounts on arrival. For the cheapest trips, pair a budget flight with a hostel dorm and a regional day pass, and a long weekend in another country can cost less than a weekend at home.
Prices are indicative ranges gathered in 2026 and will move with demand, season and how far ahead you book. Always confirm the live price in the search above before you book.
